1. The title indicates us that these two photos were taken in India. But we quickly locate the differences between these two landscapes, whereas first picture seems to take place in the periphery of a large city (at the top, we can see lot of buildings), on the contrary the second appears remote (the sky is hazy, we do not see anything except trees, is a strange place). We can imagine these two pictures are documentary or travel photographs.
2. Firstly, we have to describe these two photos in detail, because every picture tells a story. We don't know if they are silver or digital image and the date of publication however, we can believe they are handout photo. There is a vertical format and an horizontal which is too a full-length portrait. In the two photos, we can suppose it is an existing light. The present natural elements in photos are bushes decorated with flowers in the first photo and the trees without fruits in the second. Too, we can note that the first photo is sharp and colors are cool, whereas the second is fuzzy, the back is out of focus and colors are more warm and subdued. In the horizontal photo, the sharp foreground contrasts with the bluish tones of the background. They are strong tonal contrasts, and like a chiar oscuro because highlights are buildings in the background but shadows hide the detail. We notice a certain verticality illustrated in the first photo by buildings, and in the second by trees. Too, the line of horizon is placed high and the picture taker was situated on top of the scene whereas in the first is low and he was probably situated in front of the scene. We can suppose the two photos was taken on afternoon, but we are not sure and we think they are not postprocessing.
We are sure that people on the first photo are adult, even if we don't know their ages, we can't say how many women they are, because we don't know if the person which sits on the bench, next to the man dressed in white is a man or a woman. And on the second photo, there are only women.
We know it thanks to their clothes, which seem to be dresses. Moreover, the women on the first picture are dressed in various ways, their clothes are elegant even if we see them little and contrary to those of the second photo, who wear a more practical dress than aesthetics under a kind of pareo, they don't wear the veil. What seems symbolic of a kind of emancipation. However and probably by custom, both these women have barefoot.
Then and it is significant, we can notice that if the women of the first photo seem to bask by eating : they chat, careless but those of the second photo are active and draw some water (we see it thanks to jars and to arrangement of the women in circle). We don't see their expressions because they are of back and the veil masks the face, it is maybe a sign of their women's condition.
We suppose that the women who chat between them have no profession and that her husbands are millionaires or very easy. While the women who try to draw the water have certainly a very important role in the family, that to raise the children (we see a baby in a foreground) and to take charge of the lodging house (what explains the water requirement).
After this analysis, it is evident that the Indian women are not equal in front of the money, certain women are richer than in the others,
After this analysis, it is evident that the Indian women are not equal in front of the money, certain women are richer than in the others, and the women live so very differently.
I suppose that the women who live more easily that the others have children, but make them keep, they certainly have to live in luxurious palace. However, I believe that Indians are very religious and I think that social classes do not make differences in religious rites.
The seconde picture to convey a sense of irreality, the fact that the scene takes place in a kinf of mist is so strange, it is not a photo commonplace as the firs which is beautiful but which presents nothing exceptional.
They take place outside, in the first and in the top-left hand corner we have a sea view in contrast of the second, were we note like a desert landscape.
I think that it is very revealing. Effectively, the desert indicates that a territory is dry, without water resources, it is for it that we see women around one well, whereas the women of the first picture enjoy a comfort and seem to miss nothing, it is for it that we see the sea, which is a symbol of abundance. Il y a juste à faire un copier/coller, relire et changer quelques mots ou quelques tournures...
